The cabinet is planning to approve two mega port projects involving initial investments of Rs 150 billion. The ports are to be built in Colachel, Tamil Nadu, and Dahanu, Maharashtra, under the public-private partnership mode. Colachel port is planned to be developed as an international transshipment terminal and will be built in three phases with a total capacity of about 50 million tonnes (mt). Tenders for the appointment of a consultant for the port are expected to be issued soon. The project will involve reclaiming 500 acres of land. Meanwhile, Dahanu port is being developed as a multi-cargo satellite port, with a natural draught of 20 metres. The port will be located 4.5 nautical miles off the Dahanu coast about 150 km from Mumbai.
