Meanwhile, TRAI has stated that operators should not be asked to surrender excess spectrum if the maximum holding limit in a circle is changed subsequent to spectrum allocation. This comes in response to a clarification sought by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on issues relating to spectrum cap and minimum spectrum holding by telecom service providers. Currently, the spectrum cap is 50 per cent in a spectrum band identified to be fit for transmitting mobile signals and 25 per cent of the total such spectrum assigned in a telecom circle.
