East-West Corridor of Bengaluru Metro receives safety clearance

The Commissioner of Rail Safety has granted safety clearance to the East-West Corridor of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Project Phase I in Karnataka. The clearance has been granted subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions, the most important being that Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited obtain a fire safety clearance for the underground station at Majestic prior to commencing commercial operations on the stretch. Phase I of the project involves the development of a 42.3 km long metro rail network in Bengaluru at an estimated cost of Rs 138 billion. The project comprises two corridors – the east-west corridor (Purple Line) connecting Byappanahalli to the Mysore Road terminal covering a distance of 18.1 km and the north-south corridor (Green Line) connecting Hesaraghatta Cross to Puttenahalli covering a distance of 24.1 km. Commercial operations are expected to commence on the stretch by April 15, 2016.
