The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) in Gujarat is taking steps to develop alternative sources of potable water to meet its growing water requirements. The city is likely to face water shortages in the coming months as the Ukai dam, the second biggest dam in the state after the Sardar Sarovar dam over the Narmada river, is dependent for water on rainfall in catchment areas that fall in the neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. To address the issue, the civic agency is developing new French wells in order to establish its own source of groundwater. SMC already has a 45 million litre per day (mld) capacity French well in the city. Besides, two additional wells of 45 mld capacity each are almost complete and two more are in the pipeline. At present, SMC supplies 155-160 litres per capita per day (lpcd) of water. Of this, 40 lpcd is being sourced through the French wells.
