The Union cabinet has cleared the proposal for the upcoming spectrum auction, likely to be conducted in September 2016. A total of 2,142 MHz of spectrum in major bands (700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz) will be put up for sale in the auction. The cabinet has also decided to revise the lock-in period on sale of equity by telecom companies to one year instead of the earlier period of three years. The cabinet, however, has deferred the decision on fixing the spectrum usage charge (SUC) for spectrum bought in the upcoming auction as well as the method to calculate overall SUC for operators. The cabinet has referred the matter back to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for its suggestions.
