The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has extended the date for the electronic submission of verified gross mass (VGM) from July 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016. In November 2014, the International Maritime Organization approved amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea Convention, 1974, which requires (from July 1, 2016 onwards) the verification and documentation of loaded containers along with declaration of VGM before they can be loaded on to vessels. The DGS has allowed operators to obtain the VGM of their containers by end-August 2016, using any weighbridge with valid certification from the department of legal metrology of the state or union territory. The DGS has further allowed exporters to use the physical format for transmitting VGM information till September 30, 2016.
