The Union cabinet has given its approval for the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The bill will amend 68 of the 223 sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The bill also proposes 28 new sections focusing mainly on issues relating to improving road safety and facilitating citizen dealings with the Transport Department. Important provisions include an increase in compensation for hit-and-run victims from Rs 25,000 to Rs 200,000. It also has the provision for payment of compensation up to Rs 1,000,000 in road accident fatalities. Notably, the bill proposes that in the case of offences committed by juveniles, the guardian shall be deemed to be guilty.
