DoT issues demand notices worth Rs 1.1 billion to six telecom operators for under-reporting revenues

DoT has issued demand notices worth Rs 1.1 billion to six telecom operators – Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications (RCOM), Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, Aircel and Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) – to recover the first tranche of dues that these operators owe the government due to under-reporting of revenues. The move comes after a Comptroller and Auditor General of India report tabled in Parliament in March 2016 stated that these companies had under-reported their revenues by Rs 460.46 billion between 2006 and 2010, leading to a loss of Rs 124.88 billion to the exchequer. DoT is likely to issue more demand notices to telecom operators for under-reporting revenues in ten circles during 2006-07.
