Yellampalli Barrage in Telangana operationalised after delays

The Yellampalli Barrage in Karimnagar district of Telangana has been operationalised, almost two years after the completion of construction works. The barrage will be used to source water for the first phase of Mission Bhagiratha. Water will be supplied to nine assembly constituencies in Medak, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and Warangal districts. The barrage has a full reservoir capacity of 20 tmcft. However, only 6 tmcft could be utilised last year due to resistance from villages in vacating land in Adilabad and Karimnagar districts. This was due to delays in relief and rehabilitation settlements and payment of compensation for submerged lands. The project will supply 10 tmcft to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and also provide 6.5 tmcft of water to NTPC Limited’s inter-state power project at Ramagundam.
