TRAI invites companies to participate in pilot project to set up public Wi-Fi hotspots

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has invited all companies, application providers as well as hardware and software providers for setting up a pilot project of public Wi-Fi hotspots, known as public data offices (PDOs). To this end, the regulator has issued the broad objectives of the pilot programme along with the guidelines and prerequisites for companies that want to participate. Further, TRAI has also issued a draft design for the public Wi-Fi network system that is to be set up under its public Wi-Fi pilot project. As per the draft design, any entity with a valid PAN will be able to set up PDOs under the proposed system.
