GAGAN system made mandatory for aircraft registration

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has mandated that all aircraft being registered in India from January 2019 onwards be suitably equipped with the indigenous navigation system GAGAN (Global Positioning System [GPS]-Aided GEO Augmented Navigation). GAGAN was officially launched in India in July 2015 and is designed to provide the additional accuracy, availability and integrity necessary to enable users to rely on GPS for all phases of a flight. Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to develop an integrated message service for GAGAN, allowing users in non-aviation sectors to utilise its services as well.
