Prime minister launches Saubhagya scheme

The prime minister has launched the Rs 163.2 billion Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana or the Saubhagya scheme with the motive of supplying electricity to all households by December 2018. About 60 per cent of the funds for the scheme will come from central grants, 30 per cent from bank loans and the remaining 10 per cent from states. Remote hamlets will be powered through solar panels and each household will get five LED lamps, a direct current fan, and a plug point, along with a repair and maintenance facility for five years. Some individuals identified by the Socio Economic and Caste Census of 2011 will receive free electricity connections whereas others will be able to get them at a cost of Rs 500, payable in 10 instalments in the electricity bill.
