IR plans to spend around Rs 30 billion in building smart yards capable of providing mechanised maintenance and repair of rakes. As per the proposal, 40 of the 100 yards owned by IR will be automated and mechanised at an average cost of around Rs 700 million-Rs 750 million each. To begin with, yards at Mughalsarai and Tughlakabad will be made into smart yards. This move comes at a time when the national carrier plans to spend over Rs 150 billion in the next 12 months to make train travel safe for passengers.
