The Ministry of Power (MoP) has written to the states notifying the issue of coal shortages and asking them to import coal to meet demand. The coal shortage issue will be resolved once new mines commence production but this may take up to two-three years. In a separate development, the Ministry of Coal has issued a clarification regarding the responsibility of coal quality during transportation. The ministry has stated that the miner is responsible for coal quality only till the coal is loaded on rakes and the railways is responsible for it once it is in transit. Therefore, the issue of any loss during transit needs to be resolved by the consumers with the Ministry of Railways.
