Solar power plants installed at two stations by Chennai metro

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has installed 428 kW peak solar power plants on roofs of two elevated stations – Nanganallur Road and Meenambakkam – to promote the use of green energy. The solar plants, with a capacity to generate 57,780 units per month will save CMRL around Rs 2.6 million per year. Currently, the solar power will be used for lighting systems and operating electrical equipment required for the maintenance of stations. CMRL is also working towards using solar power for operation of trains eventually. Solar photovoltaic panels have also been commissioned at four underground metro stations. By installing more plants and increasing the use of solar energy, CMRL aims at reducing its carbon footprint.
