The Maharashtra state cabinet passed a revised State Port Development Policy on January 25, 2016. The new policy lays emphasis on integrated port development by increasing inland connectivity through road, rail and water transport networks. The policy, covering greenfield ports, jetties, coastal shipping, inland waterways, shipyards and coastal economic zones, will be in force for the next five years. The policy also proposes to create the Maharashtra Port Connectivity Corporation to facilitate port-related infrastructure facilities. The Maharashtra Maritime Board will operate as a single window for all clearances and concessions, while the proposals submitted by developers will be selected using the Swiss Challenge method. The policy also envisages setting up of shipbuilding units in the state.
