NHAI has signed an MoU with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the North East Centre for Technology Application and Research (NECTAR) for the use of spatial technology for monitoring and managing national highways. NECTAR‘s Department of Science and Technology uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for acquiring aerial images for infrastructure planning. The use of satellite data and geospatial technology will be useful in providing inputs in highway and infrastructure projects for the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs), pre-feasibility studies in new alignment, upgradation/road widening, monitoring of road segments under construction and setting up of road asset management systems. NHAI will take up some pilot projects with the NRSC and NECTAR to identify and finalise actual use and benefits of both satellite data and geospatial technology and UAV technology in the highway and other infrastructure sectors. A round the clock technical cell would also be set up to provide relevant project-specific data using this technology to project consultants, engineers, staff as well as other stakeholders.
