TRAI prohibits service providers from charging differential tariffs for data services

In a ruling against differential pricing, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has prohibited service providers from charging differential tariffs for data services on the basis of content. The regulations also prohibit service providers from entering into an arrangement with another entity that has the effect of a discriminatory tariff for data services. As per the regulation, TRAI will charge a penalty of Rs 50,000 per day if an operator is found to be flouting the norms. Further, data services over closed electronic communications networks have been kept out of the purview of the regulation.
